Neurovascular Center

Our Neurovascular Center enables us to treat a broader set of complex vascular conditions of the brain with state-of-the-art technology. Methodist’s highly qualified staff includes Northwest Indiana’s only NeuroInterventional Radiologist.

Leading edge technology, such as the biplane cath lab and Gamma Knife, further expands Methodist Hospitals’ ability to expertly treat a variety of conditions such as aneurisms, tumors, arterial vascular malformations, venous malformations, cavernous malformations and carotid occlusive disease.

Technically Advanced Treatments for Neurological Diseases and Conditions

Methodist Hospitals employs breakthrough technologies to effectively treat conditions such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. For example, the Vagel Nerve Stimulator (VNS) is an FDA-approved, implanted device that sends mild impulses to the brain to control seizure activity, and help maintain your independence. The Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) is most commonly used to help decrease the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or Essential Tremors. Rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement and walking difficulties are among the other symptoms that respond to this implanted device.

The Headache Program

In addition to migraine headaches, Methodist Hospitals treats a wide variety of headaches. Our holistic, multidisciplinary team approach takes the “whole person” into account in developing and executing a treatment plan.

During the initial visit, a neurologist will diagnose, recommend treatment via medication and lifestyle changes, and initiate a lifestyle diary. The consultation process takes place over an approximate four-week period, during which nurse practitioners monitor daily activities to help patients identify headache triggers. Our knowledgeable dieticians provide education on the role of diet and nutrition in the triggering and treatment of headaches.

Follow-up appointments take place at three months, six months or one year, depending upon the treatment plan and degree of resolution. Factors that will be assessed include progress towards a resolution, reactions to any medications, and the success of lifestyle modifications
