Merrillville, IN – July 3, 2012 Methodist Hospitals, Merrillville, now offers a new procedure call Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) that offers patients a minimally-invasive option to locate, enable biopsy and plan treatment for a lesion (Spot) detected deep in the lung.
Methodist Hospitals is the first hospital in Northwest Indiana to provide the summer Dimention i-Logic System as an option
for patients who have learned they have a hard-to-reach lesion on their lung. The ENB procedure combines GPS-like technology with a catheter-based system that used the patient’s natural airways to access lesions that were previously hard to reach. Typically a patient with a sport on their lung had the options of major surgery to remove a section of the lung, bronchoscopy (which does not reach lesions deep in the lung), needle biopsy, or watchful waiting.
The ENB procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and its unique approach may increase the chances that a patient will safely get a diagnosis and begin treatment, if needed.
“We are very excited about the impact that theses new technologies – electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy and endo-bronchial ultrasound will have for our lung cancer patients, said B.H. Barai, Medical Director, Oncology Institute.
“We are pleased to offer a minimally-invasive alternative for patients who have a lesion on their lung that is hard to reach or cannot tolerate a more invasive procedure. This is an option that will help many patients.”
“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women in the United States. Each year more people die from lung cancer than from breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer combined, in part because of the difficulty of making an early diagnosis. That is why Methodist Hospitals is proud to be the FIRST and ONLY hospital in the Northwest Indiana region to invest in the superDimension iLogic System, which allows physicians to look deeper into narrow lung passages than ever before, helping to diagnose cancer at earlier, more curable stages. In addition, we have also purchased the most advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound system available to further enhance our array of diagnostic tools, said Ian McFadden, President & CEO, Methodist Hospitals.
