Nurse Museum One Year Anniversary

Methodist Hospitals School of Nursing welcomed its first class in 1923 and graduated its last group of nurses in 1967. Made possible by alumni and supported by the Methodist Hospitals, the Nursing Museum helps showcase the evolution of healthcare and the nursing profession during the past eight decades. The nurse alumni are proud over 150 people have enjoyed the museum in its first year of operation. The nurse museum continues to grow and evolve, it is housed in the administration building that once served as the dormitories for the nursing students.

Healthcare Workers Head to Haiti

Methodist Hospitals Paramedic Program Medical Director and Mobile Intensive Care System Associate Medical Director, Nicholas Johnson, MD, is heading to Haiti with a team of volunteers to try and aleviate some of the suffering after the devastating earthquake. The Red Cross estimates nearly a third of the population of Haiti is in need of medical attention.

395th Combat Hospital Recognize Methodist Hospitals Partnership

Judy Strycek, RN, had no idea she would be spearheading an army training program when she joined the 395th combat support hospital as a major in 1976. “When I joined the unit, I soon learned that one of biggest concerns was how to provide medical training for these individuals that one day may have to treat patients in a combat zone. Basic skills like dressing a wound, taking vitals and how to interact with patients needed to be practiced and mastered.” Judy had been working as a House Supervisor at Methodist Hospitals since 1975. She approached the hospital administration about starting a relationship with the army and allowing the members of the 395th combat hospital unit to train at the hospital.

Methodist Hospital Employees Fulfil Holiday Wishes

Methodist Hospitals employees made Christmas morning a little brighter for nearly 200 children. A parade of bicycles, dolls, trucks, games, bedding and clothes were loaded into five trucks to be delivered to the Salvation Army as part of the Angel Tree Program. The Angel Tree program provides underprivileged children with holiday gifts and proof that someone cares. Methodist Hospitals has participated in the program for several years and employees are enthusiastic to take part in it every year! "It is a blessing to be fortunate enough to give back to others. The angel tree program gives us the opportunity to make sure these kids wake up on Christmas day a little happier and with something to look forward to. We are a community, we take care of each other. That is what Christmas is all about," stated Shirley Roberson, Human Resources, Methodist Hospitals.

Bundles of Joy

Mothers who delivered at Methodist Hospitals during this holiday season were surprised to see their new born baby wrapped in a special red holiday stocking! "Right after the babies are born we bring them to the nursery to bathe them and dress them before bringing them out to their mothers. During the holidays we bring them out in a red stocking. The reaction is always great; lots and lots of photographs," exclaimed Jill Biggs, RN, Nursery, Methodist Hospitals. The program started several years ago when the hospital volunteers would donate stockings for all the babies born on Christmas day. This year the program was expanded to all babies born in the month of December.

Methodist Hospitals Free Fall Community Health Fair

Methodist Hospitals held its Free Fall Community Health Fair on Saturday, November 7 at the Helenic Cultural Center in Merrillville, IN. Participants had the opportunity to take advantage of free health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, body fat analysis, bone density, oximetry and PSA screening. The event held from 9 am to 12 pm attracted over 400 Northwest Indiana residents. In addition to the free screenings, many of the hospital services were represented by healthcare professionals with free literature and giveaways for everyone that attended. Max, the Methodist Mascot was on hand to greet the particpants, staff and physicians!

March of Dimes event honors Ambassador Family

On November 2nd at the Avalon Manor, Nicole Greene will have the opportunity to thank the March of Dimes and Methodist Hospitals for her miracle, her son Johnny, at the 8th annual March of Dimes Signature Chefs Tasting and Auction. Johnny Greene III was born 3 months early at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus on September 20, 2008. The tiny infant spent two and a half months in the neonatal intensive care unit where he was monitored and cared for around the clock. “I am so thankful and grateful to the nurses and physicians at Methodist Hospitals’ neonatal intensive care unit. I know that Johnny would not be the happy, healthy boy he is today without their constant care and attention,” stated Nicole. Nicole Greene, her husband and Johnny will attend the event as March of Dimes Ambassador Family.
