On Wednesday, July 27th, 2012, the Gary Literacy Coalition held its first-ever public Open House to introduce community members to the Coalition and its mission, activities and accomplishments. Nearly 200 people turned out to enjoy refreshments, receive a free book and hear Executive Director Era Twyman and her staff talk about the many programs supported by the coalition. Said Twyman, “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the story of the Gary Literacy Coalition to so many potential supporters. Our sincere thanks go out to all who have supported us in the past and who are interested in coming out to support us in the future.”
The Coalition manages and implements the Reach Out and Read-Gary program, aimed at putting age-appropriate books into the hands of parents and children via pediatric health care providers. It also provides books to low-income families in the Gary community, publishes an annual Summer Connections brochure to direct parents and children to available summer reading programs and resources, sponsors the Learning Partners mentoring program at two Gary elementary programs, and sponsors Gary Literacy Day and Financial Literacy Day among other programs.
The coalition is a result of a collaboration of Methodist Hospitals, Dr. Steve Simpson, and others and currently distributes nearly 40,000 books each year to help build literacy among the children of Gary and surrounding communities. The Coalition also partners with literacy agencies to refer community members to tutoring programs.
About the Gary Literacy Coalition
Since 2001, the Gary Literacy Coalition, in partnership with Methodist Hospitals, has existed to support, promote and enhance literacy in the Gary community and to facilitate access to books and literacy opportunities for children and adults.
The Gary Literacy Coalition needs community support, in the form of volunteers and donations, to continue to fulfill its mission. To learn more about how community members can support the coalition, call Era Twyman at 219.885-2229.
