Methodist Hospital patients share their success of a 1400 pound weight loss!

Obesity is a disease that affects approximately 60 million people in the United States. We are now beginning to recognize the effects that it has on overall health. With obesity, comes the increased risk of high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, heart disease, and breast, colon, and prostate cancer. In addition, obesity has been linked to mental health conditions such as depression or feelings of shame and low self-esteem.

Methodist Hospitals hosted the 5th annual Weight Loss Style Showcase and Celebration at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville, featuring seven bariatric surgery patients who proudly showed off their new physiques. They have lost a combined weight of almost 1400 pounds! The annual event allows individuals who are considering weight loss surgery the opportunity to speak to patients who have had the procedure and can speak from experience. The event also gives the patients the chance to share their success with family and friends.

Michael Proud underwent gastric bypass surgery in October of 2006. Prior to the surgery he had reached a weight of 497 pounds and been diagnosed with high blood pressure, angina, edema and shortness of breath. He was taking blood pressure medicaltion and pain pills everyday. After his surgery he lost weight quickly and no longer needs to take his blood pressure medication or pain pills. He has maintained a healthy lifestyle and has now lost a total of 290 pounds. "I want to thank the physicians and staff at teh ReStart Center for helping, teaching, and supporting me through this process. I also want to thank my loving wife and family for supporting me and changing their habits to help me reach my goal."
