Methodist Hospitals Shares Warmth This Holiday Season

2010

The Methodist Hospitals are celebrating the holidays this winter with Angel Tree donations, patient visits from the Railcats mascot, special holiday meals, choir performances, and hospital staff confessions to prepare for Christmas.

Methodist Hospitals has teamed up with the Salvation Army this year to donate Angel Tree Gifts. This program collects and donates gifts to families with children who would be unable to receive presents on Christmas morning otherwise. Hospital staff members received an “Angel Child,” and donated gifts for him or her. The gifts were distributed to the families by the Salvation Army located in Gary, Indiana. The Salvation Army was overwhelmed by the number of donations given by Methodist employees.

Rusty the Gary Railcats mascot and Max the Methodist Hospitals mascot made their rounds through the Methodist Hospitals’ hallways to spread Christmas cheer. Rusty and Max visited patients in Pediatrics and the Rehabilitation Units. Children and other patients received Methodist t-shirts, Railcats lanyards, and souvenir Railcats baseball bats. The patients then had their pictures taken with Rusty and Max. When asked about her thoughts of Rusty and Max’s visit, one patient replied, “They’re so cute. I love them both, and dogs are my favorite! His big shoes are the cutest things! You brightened up my day!”

The Methodist Hospitals also celebrated the season with a holiday luncheon. Staff members received special, complimentary meals which included slow-roasted prime rib, Cornish game hen, roasted tandori, broccoli spears, double-baked potatoes, holiday cakes, and more. During the luncheon, the Methodist’s Holiday Choir performed holiday favorites for staff and visitors.

The Methodist Hospitals offered The Sacrament of Reconciliation for staff members. This was a time for confession for hospital employees that needed it as a part of the spiritual preparation for Christmas.
