Treatments for GERD

The treatment and management of GERD includes lifestyle changes, medications and in may cases, a medical procedure. While medications may relieve the symptoms of GERD, they do not correct or stop the reflux completely. And the side effects from medications and the life-long commitment to taking them may be problematic. For patients looking for a more permanent solution, the Methodist GERD Center offers these solutions.

Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF)
TIF is an innovative, incisionless, minimally invasive procedure performed using the FDA-cleared EsophyX® device attached to a standard endoscope.

This incisionless procedure greatly reduces the risks associated with blood loss, need for transfusions, surgical infection, and incisional herniation. Many patients go home the next day and resume normal activities within a few days. The TIF procedure offers patients:

  • Short hospital stays
  • Reduced patient discomfort
  • Quicker recovery
  • No visible scarring

Methodist Hospitals is one of the few hospitals in Northwest Indiana offering TIF treatment for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
Fundoplication is the standard surgical treatment for GERD. Methodist hospitals surgeons can perform fundoplication as a laparoscopic, or minimally invasive procedure that requires only tiny incisions in the stomach.

Patients can generally leave the hospital within one to three days after the procedure and return to work in two to three weeks.

Not all GERD patients may be candidates for the TIF or Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication procedures. A thorough evaluation by a Methodist Hospitals gastroenterologist and surgeon is required.

To find out if you are a candidate for GERD Treatments. Contact the Methodist Hospitals GERD Center at 219-769-GERD or email to schedule an evaluation.
