A small percentage of those with GERD develop Barrett’s Esophagus, a pre-cancerous change in the cells lining the esophagus that occurs as a result of chronic acid reflux. The use of Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) on patients with Barrett’s Esophagus has shown to prevent esophageal cancer. Methodist Hospitals Digestive Center physicians use RFA, which employs high-energy radio waves to destroy and burn pre-cancerous cells in the esophagus, to allow for healthy, normal cells to grow back in the esophageal lining within six to eight weeks.
