LaTiya Brewer – MS Patient

One Woman’s Journey as She Navigates Life with Multiple Sclerosis

In August 2020, LaTiya Brewer received life-altering news when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, presenting a range of symptoms that vary widely from person to person.

“MS is a lifelong disease,” said William Conte, MD, a board-certified neurologist who specializes in treating MS patients. “While it’s very jarring, some patients are relieved to get their MS diagnosis because they have answers to their problems.”

For LaTiya, the symptoms of MS have impacted her balance and coordination. She also tends to repeat herself during conversations—a subtle but persistent reminder of the cognitive impact MS can have. Fatigue, a common and often debilitating symptom of MS, also plays a significant role in her daily life.

“I get tired very easily,” LaTiya said. “After busy days at work I’m pretty exhausted when I get home. I don’t have the stamina I used to have.”

Despite the challenges, LaTiya is managing her condition with the help of a treatment plan developed by Dr. Conte at the Methodist Hospitals Neuroscience Institute.

“LaTiya and I worked closely together to develop a treatment plan that’s compatible with her lifestyle,” Dr. Conte said. “These are long-term medicines. So, they must be compatible with a patient’s lifestyle and preferences to ensure they continue to take them as directed.”

One of the most encouraging aspects of LaTiya’s journey is the stability of her condition. Regular MRIs have shown no progression in her lesions, and her symptoms have remained stable.

“She’s doing quite well so far,” Dr. Conte said. “Her markers look good and she’s essentially recovered from her initial presentation. However, we can’t get complacent while we work to prevent further progression of the disease.”

LaTiya’s gratitude for Dr. Conte’s dedication is evident as she credits him for her ability to maintain a relatively normal life despite her diagnosis.

“Dr. Conte has been great,” she said. “He’s been very considerate of the route I want to take with the MS. I appreciate all the time he’s put in for me, because I do see a difference.”

Looking ahead, LaTiya is optimistic. Living with MS has required LaTiya to listen to her body more closely, especially when it comes to managing fatigue. She remains resilient and determined to live her life fully while managing her MS with strength and grace.

Early treatment by a multiple sclerosis specialist, like Dr. Conte is crucial, as it allows for a more accurate diagnosis and the initiation of tailored therapies that can slow disease progression. This specialized care can significantly improve long-term outcomes and enhance the quality of life for patients.

“Working with an MS specialist also gives patients early access to the many new therapies that have been developed,” Dr. Conte said. “And we’re participating in clinical trials for some exciting treatments that may be available in the future.”
