Our Emergency Department staff strives to provide patients with the highest quality emergency care and service in an efficient and timely manner.

Overview

Setting the standard for critical care in Northwest Indiana, the Emergency Department at Methodist has been designated by the Governor as a Regional Coordination Center for Emergency Services since 1975.

Our Emergency Department staff strives to provide patients with the highest quality emergency care and service in an efficient and timely manner. A team of board certified doctors, registered nurses, and other specially trained staff are available at all times to treat anyone seeking emergency medical care. The Emergency Departments at both our Northlake and Southlake Campuses are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Services

The comprehensive emergency facilities at Methodist include triage, multiple examination areas, trauma areas, private OB/GYN exam rooms, behavioral observation rooms, consultation rooms, and comfortably furnished waiting areas. Medical emergencies often require immediate medical intervention in the emergency department setting. These emergencies include:

  • Breathing difficulty of any type
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Acute abdominal pain
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Fractures
  • Motor vehicle crash injuries
  • Head or neck injuries
  • Sudden severe headaches, paralysis, seizure, or stroke symptoms
  • Dehydration

Emergency Medicine Division includes pediatric and general emergency specialists and trauma surgeons. Physicians from other medical specialties also are available for consultation if the emergency doctor requests it.

Our implementation of Epic EMR facilitates rapid treatment, streamlines admitting, and gives physicians immediate access to important patient data. A Fast-Track urgent care program streamlines care to those patients who need it the most.

Teaching programs

Methodist is the only hospital in Northwest Indiana with a residency program in Emergency Medicine. Emergency Medicine Residents from Northwestern Memorial Hospital gain experience in critical care and trauma while training at our Northlake Campus.

Methodist Hospitals has a wide variety of expert instructors and is proud to host the following continuing education and certification courses:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
