The only gamma knife center in Northwest Indiana, the Northwest Indiana Gamma Knife Center at Methodist Hospitals has been utilizing this lifesaving technology since 2003. Methodist Hospitals’ Gamma Knife Center now employs the Elekta Esprit, which targets the smallest and most challenging intracranial tumors and lesions with minimal effect on healthy tissue.
The Elekta Esprit is the culmination of more than 50 years of Gamma Knife technological advancements that have transformed treatment protocols and relentlessly more the standard of care forward for certain types of brain tumors or vascular malformations of the brain.
Elekta Esprit at Methodist Hospitals is a dedicated radiosurgery system used in stereotactic irradiation of intracranial structures. Surgery is achieved by delivering a prescribed dose as one or several shots of ionizing radiation to the exact site of the target. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is the most precise form of radiation therapy with an accuracy of 0.3 mm guaranteed over the lifetime of equipment. It is a precise and powerful tool that offers hope to patients with certain brain tumors, vascular malformations and other neurologic disorders, such as trigeminal neuralgia.
