Cardiac Rehabilitation
Methodist Hospitals looks at the whole picture when treating cardiovascular diseases and conditions, with rehabilitation programs designed to help patients achieve their highest level of functioning. Through the genuine caring and knowledgeable guidance of our rehab staff, hundreds of patients have learned how to control their disease. Programs include prescribed exercise, lifestyle counseling and group support.
Cardiac Rehabilitation at Methodist Hospitals is a three phase program of comprehensive evaluation, prescribed exercise and lifestyle counseling. The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program can make a difference in the quality of life for participants and their families through their involvement in:
• Cardiovascular Evaluation
• Lifestyle Assessment
• Prescribed Supervised Exercise
• Nutritional Counseling (Individual and Group)
• Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques
• Patient and Family Education and Counseling
Phase 1 is a program of exercise and education completed during a patient’s hospital stay.
Phase 2 is a short term outpatient program of exercise and education. Prior to entering Phase II, participants undergo a complete evaluation, including a physician supervised exercise stress test. During Phase II exercise sessions, heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure are closely monitored. Education sessions, designed to broaden knowledge of lifestyle changes and aid participants in the management of coronary artery disease, are an important part of the program. Phase II sessions are conducted for 1 1/2 hours, 3 times per week, for 4-12 weeks.*
Phase 3 is a long-term maintenance program of exercise and education designed to further increase and maintain cardiovascular health and fitness. Those eligible for Phase III also include individuals at risk for developing coronary artery disease.*
*Phase 2 and 3 are staffed by professional cardiac rehabilitation nurses, respiratory therapists, clinical exercise physiologists and a registered dietitian.
